About Hertog Jan

Duke John of Brabant, also known as Hertog Jan, ascended to the throne in 1267 at a young age. Despite the heavy burden of leadership, he thrived, becoming a skilled strategist and wise ruler.

However, beyond his royal duties, Hertog Jan was also known for his love of life. He was a passionate tournament knight and a romantic poet. He enjoyed food, drink, and especially beer. As a true Burgundian, he frequently gathered friends to tour monasteries and abbeys in Brabant, where they enjoyed rich meals and royal beers.

Hertog Jan was a true beer enthusiast and even passed a law forbidding the watering down of beer to maintain its quality. Beer was so central to his life that he’s often depicted in European art holding a mug of beer in hand, earning the title of "Cambrinus," the Beer King. His legacy as a lover of beer lives on, celebrated by beer lovers everywhere.
