About Tripel Karmeliet

Created in 1791 by Jean-Baptiste Bosteels, the family brewery has inspired seven generations of Bosteels to perfect Belgian brewing. After Antoine Bosteels Sr.'s death in 1958, his wife Adrienne led the brewery through tough times until their sons, including Ivo, stepped in.

In the 60s and 70s, Belgian specialty beers faced competition from pilsners, so the Bosteels focused on pale ales and pilsners. In the 80s, Ivo introduced a new specialty beer, Kwak.

In 1993, Antoine Bosteels Jr. joined the brewery and was inspired by a local bakery’s multi-grain bread to create a 3-grain beer. Discovering a 1679 recipe from the Carmelite Abbey in Dendermonde, he realized it resembled his recipe, which led to the creation of Tripel Karmeliet.

Launched in 1996, Tripel Karmeliet was an instant success, winning a Gold Medal at the 1998 World Beer Cup, and became a modern Belgian classic known worldwide.
