How to make a big impact in your hometown.

Thomas joined AB InBev in Hoegaarden, Belgium 11 years ago, straight from school. And while he had no technical knowledge, he had lots of ambition. We trained him on the job, giving him the tools he needed to succeed, and he worked his way up to multi-operator working on classic beers like Hoegaarden, Leffe Triple and Julius. Thomas loves being part of the team so much, he has even referred five friends to the company.

“From the beginning I was given opportunities to progress. I started as an operator and learned on the job, with plenty of support from the older guys in my team,” says Thomas. “Over the years, I learned everything I could and have been promoted along the way.” Now his role involves maintaining and repairing all parts of the plant equipment to ensure that the brewery runs smoothly. He also looks to optimise the process through engineering solutions to ensure we meet our 1 million hectolitres production target. Plus, he’s a keen mentor to new team members. “I’m enjoying helping them learn, so they can experience the same success I have,” he explains.

Making an impact

According to Thomas, teamwork is a big part of the job and it creates a great atmosphere. “We are responsible for the safety of the working environment, and knowing that what we do makes a real difference gives me a real sense of pride,” he says.

He believes that the company is great at recognising individual achievements. “I was one of the youngest operators in Hoegaarden to be promoted to the position of multi-operator, I have been named Employee of the Month, and there’s always opportunities to achieve new goals,” he explains. “In the near future, I hope to progress to a First Line Management position, with a team of my own.”

Big business, small town feel

Being able to work in his hometown is an added bonus for Thomas. “Having grown up in Hoegaarden, it is really nice for me to live here and work in a local brewery,” he says. “It creates a great balance between my work and life, and gives me the chance to be part of an international company while enjoying the benefits of a local community.”

“As a result, I really enjoy my job and I don’t feel like I’m just another person in the crowd,” he smiles. “I feel valued by the company and I know everyone in my team, so I enjoy coming to work every day.”
